IFSO World Congress
Exciting Updates from the IFSO World Congress in Naples 2023!
I have recently returned from the International Federation Society of Obesity (IFSO) World Congress in Naples, which took place from August 30th to September 1st, 2023. I am thrilled to share some of the intriguing insights I gathered during this prestigious event.
First and foremost, I’m elated to announce that our efforts at The Wesley Hospital in the realm of obesity surgery continue to shine on the global stage. Our outcomes remain nothing short of world-class, consistently delivering exceptional quality of life improvements and remarkable weight loss results for our patients.
Now, let’s delve into the intriguing discussions and discoveries that unfolded at the conference. Some cutting-edge trials are currently underway, exploring novel surgical procedures. While these procedures hold promise, it’s essential to acknowledge that they are still in their infancy, and I believe it’s prudent not to rush into adopting them until their long-term effectiveness is well-established. I am always open to discussing these emerging techniques further with our patients, so please don’t hesitate to reach out if you’re curious!
Gastric balloons were a topic of conversation, but it’s important to note that they offer a short-term and relatively less effective weight loss strategy. These balloons eventually need to be removed or dissolve, leading to weight regain. Additionally, we explored newer weight loss injections like GLP1 agonists and similar medications. Initial results indicate that weight often returns upon discontinuation of these injections, and the long-term consequences are still a mystery. We’ll keep a close eye on these developments!
As of now, bariatric surgery remains the frontrunner for a permanent and successful solution to obesity. Its track record in delivering lasting results is unmatched.
In a fascinating session, an evidence-based psychologist shared insights on weight regain after weight loss surgery. To combat this issue, three major evidence-based factors were identified as particularly effective:
- Regular weighing on the scales by patients.
- Avoiding snacking between meals.
- Listening to your body and stopping eating when full.
Surprisingly, amidst a plethora of factors, these three lifestyle changes emerged as the most effective strategies for maintaining weight loss over time.
In conclusion, the IFSO World Congress in Naples was an illuminating experience, reaffirming the significance of bariatric surgery in addressing obesity. As we continue our journey toward healthier lives, remember that we’re here to support you every step of the way.
