Can You Have Weight Loss Surgery After Taking GLP-1s?
GLP-1 medications have changed the way many people approach weight management. Medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro can help support weight loss by reducing appetite and helping people feel fuller for longer.
But what happens if you have tried a GLP-1 medication and haven’t achieved the weight loss you were hoping for? Can you still have weight loss surgery after taking GLP-1s?

The short answer is yes. Taking GLP-1 medication does not automatically rule out weight loss surgery. For some people, surgery may still be an appropriate treatment option depending on their health, weight, medical history, and individual goals.
What Are GLP-1 Weight Loss Injections?
GLP-1 medications are a group of medicines that mimic hormones involved in appetite, digestion, and blood sugar regulation. They can help reduce hunger, increase feelings of fullness, and support weight loss.
Common medications used for weight management include semaglutide (found in Wegovy) and tirzepatide (found in Mounjaro). They can be an effective treatment for some people, but the amount of weight lost and how well someone responds to treatment varies.

What If GLP-1s Haven’t Worked for Me?
Not everyone responds to GLP-1 medication in the same way. Some people experience significant weight loss, while others may lose less weight than expected, experience side effects that make treatment difficult to continue, or regain weight after stopping medication.
The majority of patients who see Dr Ian Martin have already tried medications such as Wegovy or tirzepatide but have not achieved the weight loss results they were hoping for. For some, medication may provide initial weight loss but not the long-term or sustainable results they need.
According to Dr Martin, bariatric surgery remains the cheapest and most effective strategy for permanent weight loss. If you have tried a GLP-1 medication without achieving the results you were hoping for, weight loss surgery may be another option to consider.
Can You Have Weight Loss Surgery After Taking GLP-1s?
Yes. If you’ve previously taken a GLP-1 medication, you can still achieve significant weight loss with surgery.
A 2026 study from researchers at NYU Grossman School of Medicine supports this. Looking at over 6,700 patients who’d taken a GLP-1 before surgery, it found they still went on to lose substantial weight afterwards, with results only slightly behind patients who had surgery without trying a GLP-1 first. In other words, using a GLP-1 beforehand doesn’t get in the way of surgery working well.
Your previous use of a GLP-1 medication is simply one part of your overall medical and weight history. Your surgeon will consider factors such as your BMI, previous weight loss attempts, response to medication, existing health conditions, and overall health when determining whether surgery is appropriate.
So, if you’ve previously taken Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or another GLP-1 medication, you can still discuss weight loss surgery with a bariatric surgeon.
Can GLP-1s Be Used Before or After Weight Loss Surgery?
GLP-1 medications and weight loss surgery are different approaches to treating obesity, and in some circumstances they may form part of the same long-term treatment plan.
Before surgery, some patients use GLP-1 medications as part of their overall preparation to lose weight ahead of the procedure. For others, GLP-1 medications may be tried as an alternative to surgery first. If someone doesn’t achieve sufficient or sustainable weight loss with medication, they may later consider surgery as another treatment option.
After surgery, GLP-1 medications may also be considered for some patients who need additional support with weight loss or who experience weight regain.
The decision to use a GLP-1 medication before or after surgery depends on your individual circumstances and should always be discussed with your treating doctor and surgical team. GLP-1 medication should not be started, stopped, or changed around surgery without guidance from your treating medical team.
What Happens If I Decide to Explore Weight Loss Surgery After Taking GLP-1s?
If you’ve tried GLP-1 medication and are considering weight loss surgery, the first step is an individual consultation with an experienced bariatric surgeon.
Your surgeon will review your weight and treatment history, including any GLP-1 medications you have taken, as well as your overall health and weight loss goals.
From there, your treatment plan may include:
- Initial consultation: Discuss your weight history, previous treatments, health and goals.
- Individual assessment: Your medical history and current health will be assessed to determine whether surgery may be appropriate.
- Discuss your options: Your surgeon will explain the different weight loss procedures available and which may be most suitable for you.
- Prepare for surgery: If surgery is recommended, you’ll receive guidance to help you prepare physically and mentally for your procedure.
- Ongoing support: Weight loss surgery is part of a long-term approach to managing obesity, with ongoing medical, nutritional, and lifestyle support.
