The Dreaded Weight Stall

The Dreaded Weight Stall

Were you losing weight dramatically after surgery, and now the scales won’t budge? You are far from alone if you hit a weight stall when you were hoping for more weight loss. Unfortunately, some people may find they stop losing weight, or start gaining weight, 12-18 months after surgery. In the first year after weight loss surgery, most patients are diligent with their diet and workout routine, ensuring they eat the proper food and get enough exercise.

Although the cause of weight loss stall can vary from patient to patient, as time goes on, a lot of people start tolerating more foods, eat more, and exercise less, causing the scales to come to a halt. Plus, your body and your metabolism has adjusted to the changes made during surgery.

If you ever find yourself experiencing a weight loss stall, it is important to ask yourself the following:

  • Are you consistent with eating a nourishing, high protein diet?
  • Are you drinking 2L of fluid per day?
  • Are you exercising regularly and including cardiovascular and strength training?
  • Are you practicing mindful eating?
  • Are you having your multivitamin daily?
  • Are you getting adequate sleep?

What do you do?

  1. Speak to your dietitian.
  2. Start a food diary to keep track of your food, liquids and exercise.
  3. Change up your exercise routine or get more active.
  4. Make sure you are getting enough sleep!
