What to Expect on Your Journey With Brisbane Weight Loss Surgery

Weight loss surgery can be a life-changing step towards a healthier, more vibrant future. For those struggling with severe obesity or related health issues, it offers a proven, safe pathway to substantial weight loss and enhanced overall wellbeing. But the journey to lasting results goes beyond just the surgery – it’s about preparation, dedication, and continuous support through the process.

What to Expect on Your Journey With Brisbane Weight Loss Surgery

At Brisbane Weight Loss Surgery, we’re here to empower and guide you at every stage of your journey. With a range of tailored options, we ensure that you get the most from your experience. Let’s explore what you can expect on your weight loss surgery journey with us, and how we’ll be with you every step of the way.

Initial Consultation

Your first meeting will be with Peita, one of our experienced dietitians, for a comprehensive bariatric assessment. During this session, she’ll take the time to understand your medical history, explore the challenges you’ve faced with weight management, and discuss your personal goals. Peita will also provide a clear explanation of your options, helping you feel informed and empowered.

Next, you’ll meet with Dr. Ian Martin, our highly skilled bariatric surgeon. Dr. Martin will review your medical history in detail and provide an overview of the expected outcomes, as well as the benefits and potential risks of various bariatric procedures. Based on your unique needs and goals, he will recommend the most suitable procedure to help you achieve lasting results.

This is a great opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have about the procedure.

When you come for your consultation, remember to bring:

  • Medicare and private health fund details.
  • Referral letter from your GP or specialist.
  • Copies of endoscopy, cardiology, diabetic, or respiratory reports.
  • Copies of x-rays, MRIs, or CT scans.

If you prefer, Telehealth is available for your first consultation.

Preparing for Weight Loss Surgery

If you’ve decided to move forward with weight loss surgery, it’s important to prepare for the procedure. We have outlined our process so you know exactly what to expect. Properly preparing for your surgery will lead to a smoother recovery.

You will be provided with a comprehensive pre-surgery guide. Here’s a quick outline of the steps you will need to complete before your surgery:

  • Discuss all medications with Dr. Martin, as some may need to be stopped before surgery.
  • Stop smoking at least 4 weeks before and after surgery to reduce risks and help recovery.
  • Begin an Optifast diet 2–3 weeks before surgery to shrink the liver and minimise bleeding during the procedure.
  • Ensure you have a support system to care for you after the surgery.
  • Complete a blood test at QML or S&N Pathology using the form provided at your surgery booking.
  • Finalise payment by credit card over the phone or via direct deposit (contact the office for details).
  • Reply to the confirmation text the day before surgery to confirm admission and fasting times.

If you have any questions, please contact our admin team.

The Day of Surgery

The day of your procedure can feel overwhelming, but our team ensures everything runs smoothly. You’ll arrive at the hospital, meet with your surgeon and anesthetist, and have one last check-in before heading to the operating room.

On the day of your surgery, you will need to:

  • Follow any instructions given to you so your surgery can go ahead on schedule.
  • Fast for 6 hours prior to surgery (you should have received a text to confirm admission and fasting times).
  • Shower as normal on the day of surgery. Do not use any powders, perfumes, deodorants or creams on the skin.
  • Wear clean, comfortable clothes. You will be changed into a hospital gown for theatre and then change back into your own clothes to go home. It is preferable that you only bring a small bag to admissions, with medications/scripts and paperwork.
  • Present to the Admissions Desk in the main foyer of Wesley Hospital.

Weight loss surgery is typically performed laparoscopically, meaning smaller incisions, less pain, and a quicker recovery. After surgery, you’ll spend time in recovery before being moved to a hospital room for monitoring.

If you have any further questions about what to expect, please get in touch.

Post-Surgery Recovery

Recovery is a vital part of your weight loss surgery journey. You may experience some discomfort at first, but our team will provide you with clear guidelines and support to help you heal.

Dr Ian Martin recommends the added safety and comfort of an overnight stay in hospital for his procedures. This saves you considerable aftercare expenses and enables a quicker, more comfortable recovery at home.

After your surgery, you will progress through liquid, pureed, and soft food phases, with guidance from our dietitians. Regular check-ins are also required up to two years after your surgery to ensure your recovery is on track and any concerns are addressed. You can read more about these appointments here.

If you experience any problems at any stage after surgery, don’t wait for your next scheduled appointment. Contact our clinic to book a time to see Dr Martin.

Ongoing Support and Long-Term Success

After surgery, you’ll follow a structured care plan tailored to your procedure. This will include nutritional guidance and physical activity recommendations. During the first 6–8 weeks, you’ll transition from liquid and pureed foods to soft and eventually solid foods, under a dietitian’s supervision. Gentle exercise, like walking or swimming, is encouraged to support recovery. As you heal, more intense physical activity can be introduced to help you stay active and reach your goals.

Remember, weight loss surgery isn’t a quick fix. It’s a tool that requires long-term commitment. For many patients, the weight loss surgery journey can have both a big emotional and physical impact. That’s why ongoing support is important.

To support you, our team will ensure that you:

  • Have a strong support system.
  • Understand the importance of incorporating and maintaining new habits and routines.
  • Have a realistic plan for post-op care and recovery.
  • Understand your nutrition needs.

Navigate the emotional and mental adjustments with psychological support.

The goal of weight loss surgery is sustainable, long-term health improvements. Many patients find success when they stay engaged with their healthcare team, embrace new habits, and celebrate milestones along the way.

Your journey will include ups and downs, but remember—you’re never alone. The team at Brisbane Weight Loss Surgery is here to guide and support you every step of the way.
